The Augusta Chorale was organized in 1983 by Futhey Babcock, Adrienne Walker, and several other local music enthusiasts. The late C. W. Francis was the Chorale’s first musical director. The group enjoys singing a variety of music and has presented its regular concerts in addition to many special performances. We made our sixth appearance at the Annual Piccolo Spoleto Festival USA that is produced by the Charleston, South Carolina Office of Cultural Affairs, in June 2006.

The music director, Dr. Phyllis W. Anderson has been the director since 2007. Angela Arrington has accompanied the Chorale since it was formally organized in 1985. The former music director, Mr. Ellis M. Johnson, served for 20 years.

Membership is open to individuals with musical qualities identified through auditions scheduled in August and January. Persons interested in auditioning for the Chorale should call (706) 830-0991.

The 2008-2009 Concert Season commemorated the dedicated service that Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Johnson has given to the Augusta Chorale. For more than twenty years, Mr. Johnson directed the chorale, increased membership from 15 members to 65 members, and helped the Chorale to establish a reputation for excellence in choral music. Without Ellis and Ann Johnson, the Augusta Chorale would not be the fine group that it is today.
