The Augusta Chorale has performed at area public schools under its Youth Initiative for the past four years in order to share with children and youth the beauty of song.

The Preconcert Workshop – An Innovative Idea

WHO? The Preconcert workshops are designed for Children and youth, ages 5 to 18 years old who are involved in music as well as those who are not.

WHAT? The workshop will explains/demonstrates the specific area of choral music being presented at the concert. This year, the workshop will explore African American Songs, spirituals, anthems, popular, and gospel.

WHY? These preconcert workshops are designed for several purposes:

  • To develop new audiences for our performances
  • To develop consumers who will support the arts
  • To encourage parents to involve their children in the arts
  • To share the love of song with youngsters
  • To demystify choral singing
  • Attendees will sing The Star Spangled Banner with the chorale during the concert.

WHEN? These workshops will be held at 2:15 – 3:45 preceding the Christmas and Spring Concert. The workshops are free to all children and youth students who attend the 4 p.m. concert.

WHERE? Workshops were held in Paine College Music building adjacent to Chapel.

The Pre Concert workshop, Christmas 2007 – a Huge Success!
Approximately 50 attended the PreConcert Workshop in December 2007.

Attendees learned about:

  • The composer: George Frederic Handel
  • The Music – Messiah is a Cantata for choir and instruments
  • The instruments used in the concert: the piano and the pipe organ.- Children took a “FIELD TRIP” to the Chapel where children witnessed a hands-on demonstration the mighty pipe organ and the 12 foot Grand piano.
  • The 4 Voices in a choir – Soprano; Alto; tenor; bass.
  • Each child and youth Received a free American flag

Attendees were recognized during the concert and participated in the Salute as the Augusta Chorale and the audience and saluted our Armed Forces with a rendition of The Star Spangled Banner.
